Leeuwarden & Princessehof Museum
Leeuwarden, the capital of the province of Friesland, offers a very different perspective on the Netherlands.
Friesland has its own language, traditions and a strong regional identity. It is a landscape of waterways, open skies and historic towns, where Dutch history reveals itself in a quieter, more authentic way.
The region also has a remarkable ceramic heritage. Long before Delft became world-famous, the pottery traditions of Makkum were already flourishing here. Founded in the late sixteenth century, the Makkum pottery works remain one of the oldest ceramic traditions in the Netherlands.

Our visit continues at the Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics, home to one of Europe’s finest collections of European and Asian ceramics. Here we explore how porcelain shaped trade, diplomacy, collecting and taste across centuries.
After the museum, we take a walk through the historic centre of Leeuwarden. This elegant northern city is the birthplace of the graphic artist M. C. Escher, Saskia van Uylenburgh — the wife and muse of Rembrandt — and Mata Hari, one of the most enigmatic women of the early twentieth century.
